Belfast Transport Hub

2015

The Malcolm Hughes team was invited to undertake a thorough examination of Belfast city centre’s rail environment, comprising several complicated junctions and multiple railway lines.

The Malcolm Hughes team visited Northern Ireland’s capital, the city of Belfast, to undertake a thorough examination of the city centre’s rail environment. Despite the complexity of several of the network’s junctions, a highly accurate survey was successfully carried out with the utmost precision.

The rail survey of Belfast was carried out during a series of nightly rail possessions in June and July 2015. The area surveyed featured several complicated junctions and multiple railway lines, which were assessed at five-metre intervals.

The team’s expertise in topographic, structure gauging and monitoring, track alignment and geometry surveys allowed them to complete the survey to the very highest standard.

• Topographical Survey of Plain Line and complex Switch and Crossing Units/S&C.
• Platform Gauging through over 1km of platforms.
• Structure Gauging.
• Drainage Surveys.

On behalf of the client, Northern Ireland Railways, Richard Johnstone/Translink said:

“Northern Ireland Railways (NIR) engaged Loy Surveys [Malcolm Hughes] through a competitive tender exercise to produce a topographical rail survey associated with the new Belfast Hub project. Due to the section of track in question, daytime working was not possible, therefore the survey had to be carried out under overnight engineering possessions. We found the team at Loy to be exceptionally well-experienced and highly adaptable to meeting our needs. The team maintained close liaison with all other key stakeholders throughout the commission including engineers and contractors and assisted in agreeing the extent of vegetation clearance works required. The survey was of high quality and captured all the specific details of the track work and key trackside features. It was a pleasure working with Loy [Malcolm Hughes] and we would be happy to recommend them to others.”
