LEEDS TOWN HALL

2022 – 2023

Leeds Town Hall and Victoria Square Forecourt

Leeds City Council recently proposed a project to renovate their prominent Town Hall, a stunning grade 1 listed, Victorian Building. In order to aid in the planning and costing of renovating the hall and forecourt, Malcolm Hughes were enlisted to provide survey information in the form of:

2D and 3D Measured Building Surveys

3D Topographic Survey

Underground Utility Mapping Survey to PAS128 standards.

The purpose of these surveys was to provide an accurate record of the existing site and building, to enable the preparation of detailed drawings for the planning application, and to detail the site and building for construction purposes.

To capture the complex details of this historic building, Malcolm Hughes used Laser Scanning technology, which is ideal for projects where features cannot be accessed physically or consist of complex geometry. Laser scanning is also a perfect solution for BIM projects where 3D models are required as deliverables. It allows for comprehensive site data capture, enabling the provision of various point cloud deliverables to aid in the creation of 3D BIM models or 2D drawings to suit client requirements.

Malcolm Hughes provided the client with the 2D and 3D measured building surveys in RVT 2020, IFC and DWG format, with supplementary PDF drawings of each floor plan and elevation. The 3D topographic survey of Victoria Place forecourt and Utilities PAS128 survey were delivered in DWG format, this included the cover and invert levels, depths of all underground services and the size and direction of flow of drains.

The comprehensive site data captured provided a complete model of the asset, enabling future planning and costing without additional site visits. This showcases the power of laser scanning as well as the ability to transfer it into a BIM ready format for use in design, construction and asset management.
