Trainee Utility Mapping Surveyor
We are looking for a number of enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals to work alongside an experienced utility mapping team based in all corners of the UK. We are specifically looking for candidates in the following areas:
- Leeds
- Yorkshire
- Hull
- Bridlington
- Bristol
However we will consider applicants all over the UK. The role would involve assisting the surveyor with tracing and recording buried utilities at sites throughout the selected area, developing skills that enable you to progress to a utility surveyor.
Your training would include:
- Training in all utility survey techniques, EML/GPR etc
- Training using Total Stations and GNSS
- Formal qualifications (QCF Level 3 qualification in underground utility mapping)
- Gaining experience at working on various types of sites, from congested city centres to isolated rural locations.
- Liaising with clients and staff at all levels within the business.
The successful candidate will be someone that is self-motivated, has excellent communication skills, and can work well as part of a team.
Ideally as a candidate you should have the following:
- A committed attitude and eagerness to learn in a fast-paced industry.
- Ability to use your initiative, problem solve and work to deadlines.
- Effective communication skills and good time keeping.
- Full UK driving licence.
- CSCS card (if you do not have this, we will assist you in attaining one)

Desired qualifications

Future prospects
A successful apprentice who shows the right attitude and aptitude for the work will quickly gain promotion to junior surveyor, with responsibility for their own work. Salary advancement can be rapid for a capable surveyor with a ‘can do’ attitude, with a choice of company vehicle provided.

A driving licence is essential (due to travelling within the role).

We are looking for Utility surveyors in Scotland to join our successful Land Survey team.
Professional, ambitious, and self-motivated individuals required to join our team as we look to grow our service offering.
Malcolm Hughes is one of the leading survey companies in the UK. We operate from offices around the UK and offer our clients genuine nationwide coverage.
Suitable candidates should have at least 2-3 years’ experience working as a utility surveyor and a strong understanding of the PAS128 specification.
In addition, the following attributes are essential:
- Working knowledge and able to demonstrate correct use of EML and GPR equipment and accessories in line with PAS128.
- Strong understanding of land survey theory and the ability to use Total stations and GNSS receivers for pickup of utility marks.
- Capable/Proficient in data processing, interpretation, and presentation of survey results (using AutoCAD or other)
- Proficient in the creation of written survey reports, permits to dig, manhole and inspection chamber record cards in accordance with PAS128.
- Experience of working with high density array GPR equipment such as Stream C
- Experience in taking projects from ‘field to finish’ liaising with clients on requirements/specification and providing professional advice.
- Experience of post processing GPR data is desirable although not essential.
- Effective communication skills.
- Able to work well and contribute as part of a team.
- Ability to use your initiative, problem solve and work to deadlines.
- Good time keeping.
- Flexibility to work away from home for periods and accommodate various shift patterns when required (such as night shift etc).
- A committed attitude and eagerness to learn in a fast-paced industry.
- A full clean UK driving licence.
