Supporting a new sports pitch for South Morningside Primary School

Malcolm Hughes Land Surveyors has supported a collaborative community project to deliver a new multi-sports pitch for pupils at South Morningside Primary School in Edinburgh. 

The project brought together Big Hearts Community Trust, the City of Edinburgh Council, Robertson Construction Central East, and several of Robertson’s supply chain partners. Together, the organisations transformed an ageing tarmac area into a modern, floodlit sports pitch at no cost to the school. 

As part of the collaboration, our team provided a PAS128 utility survey to support the planning and construction of the new facility. 

Providing reliable information before construction 

Before work could progress, Robertson Construction required reliable information about the underground utilities within the project area. Our PAS128 survey helped identify and map services across the site, providing the project team with important information to inform its drawings, site preparation, and planned construction activities. 

Understanding the position of underground utilities at an early stage can help project teams make informed decisions, reduce uncertainty, and manage the risks associated with excavation and construction work. 

Creating more opportunities for local pupils 

The completed facility has replaced the school's ageing tarmac sports area with a dedicated space for football and other physical activities. South Morningside Primary School was selected for the project because of its enthusiasm for sport, strong football culture, and commitment to widening participation in physical activity. 

The school is also home to an award-winning girls' football team, which had previously trained and played without access to a dedicated pitch. The new floodlit facility will enable pupils and the wider school community to enjoy sport throughout the year.
