Malcolm Hughes to Support Step-Free Access Upgrades on Glasgow Subway
Malcolm Hughes is proud to be contributing to the next phase of accessibility improvements on the Glasgow Subway. Following Strathclyde Partnership for Transport’s appointment of COWI to develop step‑free access proposals for Buchanan Street and Hillhead stations.
As part of the multidisciplinary, specialist team assembled for the programme, Malcolm Hughes will undertake detailed site surveys. This will be supporting design and engineering partners including BDP (Architect) D2E (Lift Consultant), Jensen Hughes (Fire Engineering) and Mima Group (Access and Inclusion). This appointment marks an important step toward modernising infrastructure that must balance operational requirements, ageing structures, and the need to minimise disruption for the thousands of passengers who rely on these stations every day. All while maintaining operations within a challenging historic and underground environment.
Expert Surveying Support for Rail, Infrastructure and Complex Environments
For Malcolm Hughes, this project represents an opportunity to contribute essential high‑precision spatial data to one of Scotland’s significant accessibility initiatives. Detailed site surveys form a foundational part of the process, ensuring that engineering and architectural proposals are grounded in accurate, robust, and safely collected information. This is especially critical in the Glasgow Subway, where confined spaces and complex underground layouts demand meticulous planning and coordination. We are pleased to play a key role in shaping the next chapter of Glasgow Subway’s evolution and supporting improved access for all.
